Welcome to Edmonton! Edmonton is the capital city of Alberta, known for its beauty, cleanliness and spaciousness. Situated on the North Saskatchewan River, it boasts the longest stretch of urban parkland in North America – 22 times larger than New York’s Central Park. There are over 70 golf courses in the greater metropolitan area, including Canada’s oldest municipal golf course, Victoria Golf Course, built in 1907.
The city averages 12.32 hours of sunshine daily, providing plenty of sun. These beautiful blue Alberta skies make it one of the sunniest cities in Canada.
Whether your choice is fine cuisine or comfort food, there is an abundance of restaurants to serve you in all areas of the city: café and bistros, family diners, steak houses (serving world renowned Alberta beef), as well as a wide range of international eateries and theme restaurants.
The Edmonton region offers great shopping at a number of unique local shops. Visitors enjoy extra savings because Alberta is the only province in Canada without a provincial sales tax. West Edmonton Mall is North America’s largest shopping and entertainment complex. More than just a shopping mall, West Edmonton Mall is home to a giant water park, man-made lake, skating rink, mini-golf course, movie theatres, Vegas-style casino and an amusement park with 25 rides and attractions.
Museums & AttractionsThe Royal Alberta Museum is one of Canada’s five most popular museums and attracts more than 300,000 visitors annually. Set in a park just west of downtown, the Museum offers a full range of exhibits and activities for every age level and interest.
There’s nothing quite like TELUS World of Science, whose mission is to create a positive science and technology culture to inspire and motivate people to learn and contribute towards science and technology advances that strengthen themselves, their families, and their community.
Fort Edmonton Park is Canada's largest living history museum. Nestled in the scenic Edmonton River Valley, Fort Edmonton Park offers a taste of Edmonton's history you'll never forget.
Arts & Culture
Sir Winston Churchill Square, in the heart of Edmonton's urban core, is where many of the city's 40 festivals take place. The Downtown Arts District surrounds the Square and includes the Winspear Centre, home of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, the Citadel Theatre, the Art Gallery of Alberta, the Stanley Milner Public Library, and beautiful City Hall with its millions of dollars of art on display.
However, arts and culture is not limited to downtown. Our city is well known for a number of festivals, including the world-renowned Fringe Theatre Festival, one of the largest theatre events in North America, and the very-popular Edmonton Folk Music Festival. For this reason, Edmonton is called Festival City!
Aurora BorealisThe aurora borealis is also called the northern polar lights, as it is only visible in the sky from the Northern Hemisphere. On a clear night you might catch a glimpse of the colourful dancing lights as they illuminate the northern horizon. The Cree people call this phenomenon the "Dance of the Spirits."
We hope you enjoy your stay in Alberta’s Capital City!
